About 45 crew members and equipment and 60 people from Queenstown were hired for the filming of a television commercial for an American jewellery chain store in the town this week.

Auckland-based company Smasher Productions completed a total of eight days of filming yesterday, split evenly between Auckland and both the Wakatipu and Snow Farm, Cardrona.

The locations in the Wakatipu included the Jack's Point clubhouse and Church Lane, Stanley St, Adelaide St and Hensman Rd in Queenstown.

Smasher executive co-producer Claire Kelly, of Auckland, yesterday thanked neighbours for their support while filming took place and praised the assistance of the Queenstown-based Film Otago Southland office.

"We needed snow, so this was the place to come and to lock down a street like this in Auckland becomes a really big deal," Miss Kelly said.

"There are so many retailers, it's sometimes easier to shoot in a place like this."

Miss Kelly said her company shot a Mitsubishi car commercial for Russia by the Dart River, near Glenorchy, earlier this year.

The Wakatipu was "a favourite place to work, the locations are amazing. I love coming down here," she said.

Directed by Rome-based American award-winning film-maker Michael Haussman, who directed videos for Justin Timberlake and Madonna, among others, the "reasonable budget" commercial involved a series of seasonal romantic vignettes, Miss Kelly said.

It was co-produced by Smasher partner David Lethem, who was also first assistant director.

The commercial was expected to air in North America in October or November.
