Two women from the United Kingdom will appear in the Queenstown District Court on Monday, charged in relation to an alleged racial incident in the resort on Sunday.
Sergeant Steve Watt, of Queenstown, said a 23-year-old was charged with assault and a 24-year-old was charged with offensive behaviour likely to cause violence.
The women handed themselves in to Queenstown police yesterday morning following ''media attention''.
On Tuesday, the Otago Daily Times reported a 30-year-old Australian tourist had hot coffee ''poured over her head'' after challenging a woman who had allegedly made derogatory comments about Asian tourists.
The victim had been standing with a friend outside Fergbaker, in Shotover St, when the women allegedly tried to push past them at 12.30am.
Sgt Watt said on Monday one of the women was overheard making ''some racist comments'' and was approached by the victim who challenged her.
The situation escalated and one of the women allegedly poured a cup of hot coffee over the victim's head, face and clothes. She sustained a small burn to her face and complained of sore eyes as a result of the alleged assault.
