That is the motto of the organisers of the Glenorchy Races, the quirky race meeting at the township’s recreation ground that will run for the 57th time today.
A staple in the social calendars of many Wakatipu residents, the event will stick to its traditional formula of 10 races, including the ladies’ gallop, the quarter-mile sprint, the saddle race and, to finish off, the locals’ gallop.
The flag will fall on the first race — the walk, trot and gallop — at 11am.
With up to 3000 people expected, there is a lot of work to do to get the racecourse and surrounds ready.
That is probably why longtime organiser Bruce Douglas sounded a little under the pump when the Otago Daily Times called on Thursday.
He and a group of volunteers were preparing the racetrack for the 50-odd horses and riders and setting up facilities such as fencing, toilets, rubbish bins and sound system.
Mr Douglas said the only change this year was an increase in the entry cost — up to $20 from the $15 charged for the past few years.
He put that down to rising compliance costs such as installing enough toilets and health and safety measures.
Otherwise everything was the same as usual, including what he hoped would be a continuation of the decent weather the races had enjoyed in recent years.
The forecast was "looking OK" for today, although it could be windy.
Although the races were a major social event, the main focus was on raising money for local organisations such as the primary school and public swimming pool, he said.
"That’s why we do it — to raise money for the community."
Once the racing is over the real party will begin, with Queenstown band The Cellar Doors beginning their set some time between 6.30pm and 7pm.
As usual, many racegoers will set up camp and stay overnight in their tents.
