Tourism New Zealand (TNZ) promotes almost 50 adventure activities in the Southern Lakes in its first mobile app, ''Essential New Zealand''.
The free app, which was launched last week, features more than 1150 New Zealand activities and travel experiences with advice and maps for travellers, which can be accessed with or without a Wi-Fi connection.
''Get adventurous in Queenstown with bungy-jumping and jet-boating'' is presented as one of the top 10 experiences when the app is opened.
A tap on the photograph of a Shotover Jet boat in action takes the user to a scrolling list of 49 activities which can be sorted by rating, or by price from lowest to highest, beside a map of the Wakatipu which pinpoints the locations of the activities.
Each entry offers a description of the activity, the price, contact details, location and map.
Activities can be added to form a trip and directions are given for the nearest i-Site visitor centres.
TNZ said it received record traffic to newzealand.com, attracting more than 13.8 million visits in the past year. The volume of traffic from mobile devices increased 250%.
TNZ's visitor experience monitor found tourists' use of mobile devices while in New Zealand increased significantly between 2011 and 2012, with travellers using a tablet or laptop up 44%, and use of a smartphone up 28%.
TNZ spokeswoman Catherine Bates said travellers were now using digital media prior to and throughout their travels.
''Mobile is an increasingly important channel for operators, with a 1000% increase in mobile referrals from newzealand.com in the past year.
We already have new features in development for future versions of the app.''
