Street proposals

The discussion document for the Ardmore-Brownston St upgrade has been released to allow public feedback by February 5.

Changes are being made to help Wanaka achieve a vision outlined in the Wanaka Town Centre Strategy for a "relaxed yet vibrant town centre, well connected to the landscape where locals and visitors . . . congregate".

Ardmore St is the arterial road in the town centre and carries about 6000 vehicles a day, increasing to about 8000 in the summer holidays.

Brownston St is a collector road providing access to a mixture of commercial and residential properties.

It is forecast traffic will increase 50% by 2026.

The goal is for traffic to use Brownston St more easily.

This could include widening the road by removing all east-side parking between Ardmore and Dungarvon Sts.

The most significant change is the proposed intersection of Brownston and Ardmore St, on Caltex corner.

The options are a roundabout or a T-section, with the roundabout preferred.
