Underneath the Wakatipu Rugby Club rooms resides another long-running and staple club in which a rubber ball is hit repeatedly against the very accepting walls, giving players a generous workout and often forcing spectators to their seat's edge.
The Queenstown Squash Club has two courts under the rugby club rooms, and, on different nights of the week, cater for differing ages, abilities or competitiveness.
Former secretary Honor Mathieson said Monday nights were put aside for school-age players or juniors, Tuesdays were social, Wednesdays were competitive for graded players who participate in inter-club games and Thursdays were to be for beginner coaching.
The coaching is to begin on Thursday, May 2, for six weeks from 6pm to 7.30pm.
While the coaching can be claimed at no charge, players join the club with a beginner introductory membership for $150 for three months with the option of upgrading to a full membership for $120 extra.
Pricing for other nights starts from $30 for six games for the social Tuesday nights.
Ms Mathieson said the club boasted two A-grade men and an A-grade woman, whom players could watch and learn from.
Among members is Tom Merrall, who in his three years of playing squash has improved to a very competitive level in his grades, has had success at tournaments in Southland and Otago.
And Hamish Foster, who began playing as a pupil at Wakatipu High School, is now a high B-grade adult player and a club president.
