Temporary speed restrictions are being introduced in parts of Queenstown during the summer period.
Queenstown Lakes District Council communications adviser Jimmy Sygrove confirmed the speed limit in Arthurs Point has dropped from 70kmh to 50kmh. In Cardrona, the 70kmh speed limit has been extended from the village to the Wanaka side of the Cardrona Distillery entrance. Mr Sygrove said the speed restrictions would be reassessed in March.
"Over the summer period temporary speed restrictions have been put in place ... Both areas have had the speed limits dropped in response to community concerns and QLDC being part of a broader national safer roads programme ‘Any number is too many’."
The council also announced this week additional traffic management and parking personnel, additional car parking, extra custodians and extended waste bin clearances for the area.
In Queenstown, traffic management personnel were "on stand-by" to help manage pedestrian crossings on Shotover St, should the need arise, as well as other "pinch points" on the roading network.
A free temporary day-time park will be made available at Warren Park, by the Wakatipu High School site, in Gorge Rd.
