Those heading to the beach in Queenstown yesterday were confronted by this mysterious giant sculpture installed on the Esplanade.

It was designed by Yelena Filipchuk and Serge Beaulie, of Hybycozo, and 10% of the profits from its eventual sale will go to supporting the Lakes District Arts Trust.

A plaque suggests the sculpture is for individuals to enter while contemplating "a new direction for themselves and for our communities".

It says the temporary installation is a nod to the interlude before international visitors return to Queenstown.

"This art piece will be here and will go away again as a fleeting visitor."

At night, the golden dome is lit up in different colours and was previously on display in Wanaka for six weeks.
