A woman accidentally shot in her Queenstown home on Monday is lucky to be alive, police say.
The woman was flown to Dunedin Hospital, where a spokeswoman yesterday evening said she was ''progressing favourably''.
Queenstown CIB continue to investigate the ''accidental discharge'' of a shotgun by a man in the garage of the Shotover Country house.
Senior Sergeant Paula Enoka, of Queenstown police, said the woman was ''extremely lucky''.
''We're talking about centimetres and inches - it could have been a couple of centimetres either way and we would be looking at a very different situation today.''
She could not comment on the relationship between the man and the victim, but police expected to interview both yesterday.
The shotgun was seized and an initial examination of the garage was carried out immediately after the incident, Snr Sgt Enoka said.
Specialist firearms staff examined the scene again yesterday.
