TSS Earnslaw sits on the Kelvin Peninsula slipway in Lake Wakatipu’s Frankton Arm for its annual routine maintenance.

Chief engineer Peter Dorrington said about 20 Real Journeys staff and contractors had been working on the steamer since last week.

Over the next four weeks, they would survey the starboard propeller, paint part of the hull and carry out maintenance of the wooden deck.

Both engines were being dismantled and inspected, and  any necessary repairs would be carried out.

"They’re the original engines and need a high level of care and attention. That’s what keeps her running so well after 105 years."

The "Lady of the Lake" will return to the water on June 22.
