A man has been rescued from near the Routeburn Track after activating his locator beacon this morning.

Maritime New Zealand spokesman Mark Dittmer said two members of the Wanaka Alpine Cliff Rescue team reached the man on foot after being dropped off by a helicopter.

He was found in an area between Lake Harris and Lake Wilson, in the left branch of the Routeburn Valley, not far from the popular tramping route.

Mr Dittmer said the man did not need medical treatment and was dropped off near his car at the entrance to the track near Glenorchy.

The beacon, which is registered to a Rangiora man, was activated about 8.30am.

Weather conditions in the area were poor, with strong winds and low cloud.
