Queenstown's Returned and Services’ Association (RSA) branch has awarded the prestigious annual David Geddes Memorial Scholarship to Wakatipu High 2024 head boy Mason Clarke.

The $1000 scholarship’s funded by the branch and the family of the late David Geddes, who reformed the branch in 2005.

Mason, 17, will be studying for a Bachelor of Commerce at Otago Uni next year, though that might have to share the billing with his burgeoning cricket career.

The fast bowler was the youngest member of New Zealand’s under-19 team who played in the U19 Cricket World Cup in South Africa early this year when he was only 16.

He’s playing T20 games for Otago A in Taupo and Auckland this week, and is also in the NZ men’s development team — "a sort of step-up from the U19 team".

He’s also hoping to make the Otago Volts in a year or two.

"I guess cricket’s the main thing, but if not I want to do something in the business world, whether that’s CEO [level] or not."

Mason, who was also co-chair of the student executive, says his five years at Wakatipu have been great — "I wouldn’t really change a thing".
