Rink back from the brink

Successfully revived last year after sitting in ruins for about 30 years, Arrowtown’s free Bush Creek ice rink reopened last Saturday — pictured are ice makers Glenn ‘Goose’ Wearing, left, and James van Leeuwen.

‘Rink leader’ Rebecca Dobson says her team of volunteers are "absolutely stoked" after coming back from last September’s devastating flood.

"We are lucky we have a community that helped us fundraise and such a great dedicated volunteer crew that was able to provide time and resources to clear the area, rebuild the base and even make some improvements.

"We know we are very reliant on mother nature, and the results are not always guaranteed, but that’s the beauty of this place.

"It’s exciting when the temperatures are right and the ice makers are down there late nights and early mornings putting layers on the ice and getting it ready for the day."

Dobson says even non-skaters are invited to bring a hot drink and cosy up by the purpose-built fires/braziers.

There’s a Bush Creek Ice Facebook page for updates on ice conditions.

Meanwhile, the nearby Ayrburn hospo precinct also opened an ice rink last weekend as part of its transformation this month into a Christmas wonderland.
