A Queenstown restaurateur urinated in the telephone room of the resort town’s police station after being caught drink-driving, a court has heard.
Jin Jin Tan, 44, of Lake Hayes Estate, was pulled over while driving in Church St about 2.10am on July 14.
After a positive breath screening test, he was taken to the police station for an evidential breath or blood test.
At Tan’s sentencing in the Queenstown District Court on Monday, prosecuting Sergeant Ian Collin said the defendant was waiting for a call from his lawyer when he began urinating on a power outlet in the floor.
Despite being told to stop several times, he continued relieving himself for about 30 seconds.
"As a result of the defendant’s actions, this area of the custody suite was unable to be used until it was professionally cleaned," Sgt Collin said.
A subsequent blood test gave a result of 159mg — more than three times the legal limit — and he was charged with drink-driving.
A charge of intentional damage arising from the urination incident was withdrawn at yesterday’s hearing.
Counsel Megan Waller said Tan was a co-owner of a relatively new restaurant in Queenstown.
His offending had caused friction with his business partner, and caused mental health distress to himself.
Judge Catriona Doyle convicted Tan, imposed a fine of $800, court costs of $130, and disqualified him from driving for six months.
He must pay $78.97 reparation to the police.
