A tramper was rescued by helicopter from a steep Queenstown hill on Saturday afternoon  after slipping on ice.

Emergency services were called to Alan Reids Rd, off Malaghans Rd near Arrowtown,  about 1.45pm.

The man (67) let off a flare when they arrived so they could pinpoint his position high up on the hill, about 4km down from Coronet Peak skifield.

Firefighters from Arrowtown and Frankton walked up to find him and then a Heliworx Helicopters aircraft, operating through Lakes District Air Rescue Trust, took St John paramedics to him and then brought him down.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand station officer Nathan Clark said  the man had "slipped on ice and taken a fall while a few hundred metres up".

He had a "few lacerations to his face, a sore back, and a bit uncomfortable but no broken bones".

The man walked to the ambulance in Alan Reids Rd from the helicopter and was then taken to Lakes District Hospital with what a St John spokesman described as moderate injuries. Earlier that  morning, St John paramedics were called to meet a Jetstar flight from Melbourne after four passengers complained of feeling sick. One was taken to  hospital for a check-up.

And at 8.50am yesterday,  a pedestrian was taken to hospital with a suspected broken leg after being hit by a car in Robins Rd, off Gorge Rd.
