The Remarkables will start spinning its first chairlift, Curvey Basin, at 9am today, thanks to a lot of work from NZSki staff.

While the ski area officially opened last Saturday, a lack of snow and warm temperatures hampering snowmaking meant only the Tahi and Rua magic carpets were operating.

However, ski area manager Ross Lawrence said snowmaking, helped by extra groomer drivers able to manipulate the snow, had been "the saviour".

While the base was still "minimal" — up to 30cm — he hoped to be able to hold on to it.

"Depending on crowds [and] a little bit more snow in a week, and a little bit more snowmaking along the way, I think we’ll be able to maintain it."

At present there was no sign of any snow in the forecast over the next five days; however, the inversion layer which had caused issues at both The Remarkables and Coronet Peak was clearing, which meant colder temperatures, enabling the snowguns to fire up properly.

"Snowmaking will be our saviour in the short term [but] may the snow come soon."
