A new resource identifying "rainbow-friendly" businesses in Queenstown is believed to be a New Zealand-first.

The organisers behind the resort's Winter Pride festival and Pride Pledge launched the new guide yesterday morning.

It shows all Queenstown businesses which have signed the Pride Pledge, which is an initiative to increase visibility, inclusion and safety for LGBTTQ+ people.

Pledge director Martin King said Queenstown had more "rainbow-friendly" businesses than any other community in New Zealand.

"We need to show our ally-ship and our businesses that are committed to inclusiveness."

He said other places do have maps of businesses owned by members of the LGBTTQ+ community, but he believed a map of rainbow-friendly businesses was a national first.

The guides will be available at Queenstown's i-Site, and any Pride Pledge businesses keen to have a copy for their workplace can contact the organisers.

Queenstown i-Site manager Kerrie Hartnett-Ryan said visitors were "more open" about asking for rainbow-friendly businesses and the guide would lift awareness even more.

A wall in the i-Site would be dedicated to advertising those businesses, she said.

"That way, if people don't want to come up and ask the question, they can just go up to the wall and have a look."

She said there were people living in Queenstown who were originally from places such as China, where being openly LGBTTQ+ was not possible.

Making places like the i-Site could help them feel more comfortable and open in the community, she said.
