The inaugural Clued Up Kids programme, which began at the Lake Hayes Pavilion this week, is aimed at instilling resilience and confidence through hands-on experiences.
Once the programme is delivered to more children at the Wanaka Recreation Centre on March 31 and April 1, more than 340 year 6 pupils from across the district will have taken part.
Queenstown Lakes District Council recovery team community lead Marie Day said groups of 10 children moved around a circuit of 15-minute activities that included an earthquake simulation, a "smoke out tunnel" and sessions focused on safety relating to animals, the back country, water, seat belts, CPR and emotional literacy.
Clued Up Kids was an engaging model used throughout the world to build resilience and confidence in children, Ms Day said.
"With so many public safety organisations jumping on board this year, we feel this is a great programme for our local kids, and something we hope to run as an annual event."
The organisations running the sessions are Civil Defence, council animal control, Land Search and Rescue, Fire and Emergency NZ, harbourmaster Marty Black, police, Sport Otago, St John and the Wakatipu and Kahu Youth Trusts.
