Power supply fault keeps Remarkables shut

An electrical fault prevented the Remarkables ski area opening for a second consecutive day yesterday.

Staff and contractors spent most of yesterday  searching for the cause of a power cut  on Wednesday  morning.

Ski area manager Ross Lawrence said specialist equipment was being used to check cabling beneath the access road.

Two possums were blamed for a power cut that stopped the ski area opening on June 13, but the cause of the latest outage was less clear, he said.

A dead possum found on overhead lines at the foot of the mountain was a possible factor, but not the primary cause.

"The cause is an underground fault where the cable goes underground, but it might have been an influencer because of the surge of power and shorting out, and a restarting may have activated an existing fault."

Once the exact location of the fault was found, it would take about three hours to repair.

Such a problem had not occurred in the decade he had been the ski area’s manager, and its electrical infrastructure, including overhead lines and underground cabling, was "definitely under review".

He was optimistic the ski area would open this morning.

"But we’re very fortunate in this town that we’ve got Coronet Peak operating as well, so there’s another spot to go with the same [ski] pass," Mr Lawrence said.
