Sergeant Steve Watt, of Queenstown, said he understood the girl had been transferred to Auckland's Starship Hospital for further treatment.
She was airlifted to Christchurch Hospital in a critical condition after being hit by a car on Jack's Point Rise on April 18.
Police said at the time the child was walking with her mother when the incident occurred.
It was unlikely the driver of the car would be charged, Sgt Watt said.
