Police are making slow progress in tracking down the next of kin of a man who died in Arrowtown at the weekend.

Wai Ming Lai (51), of Hong Kong, was found about a kilometre along the Sawpit Gully track, in Arrowtown, about 9.30am last Saturday.

Attempts to resuscitate him by police and ambulance staff were unsuccessful.

On Wednesday, police issued a public plea for information to help gain a picture of the visitor’s movements in the area, including where he had been staying.

He arrived in New Zealand on July 27 and had been due to leave on October 18, but did not board that flight, and there was no evidence he had rebooked his flight.

His passport, which was in a backpack he was carrying when he was found, expired on Wednesday.

Yesterday, Detective Senior Sergeant Malcolm Inglis said police had subsequently established Mr Lai had visited New Zealand three times previously.

During this trip, he stayed in Wanaka last week, where he used buses for transportation, and had earlier stayed in Queenstown at a backpackers for a week, but police did not know where was staying at the time of his death.

He had been travelling with a large, silver suitcase, but police had not yet located that.

Results of a postmortem had not yet been received, but Det Snr Sgt Inglis said, at this stage, there were no suspicious circumstances.

"[His death] appears unexplained, possibly medical.

"We’re just starting to make some progress in Hong Kong to try to establish his next of kin, but it’s been quite slow at this stage."
