A Parapenter suffered burns after hitting a 11,000-volt power line and falling into a gully near Queenstown yesterday.

A helicopter was deployed to search for the man, believed to be in his late 20s or early 30s, near Coronet Peak skifield.

Paramedic Dianne Payne, acting territory manager for St John Otago, was on board and treated him.

She told the Otago Daily Times he was in a lot of pain and had suffered ''moderate to serious electrical burns''.

''He was conscious and alert when we got to him.''

She confirmed it took about 20 minutes to locate the man who had fallen into a ''gully''.

He was flown to Lakes District Hospital, where he was stabilised, before being transferred to Dunedin Hospital.

Delta's operations manager for Otago, John Campbell, said it was alerted to the ''power interruption'' by a member of the public.

''Control room received an alarm to show that supply to Coronet Peak had tripped and then we received a call to say there had been a paraglider [parapenter] contact the 11,000-volt line.''

Delta crew attended the scene to check the system and restore power.

Mr Campbell was not able to say exactly where the line was hit or the height of the line.

Other emergency services also searched for the injured man, including a 4WD Fire Service vehicle.

Police confirmed the man was airlifted at 5.17pm and said he had also injured his leg.
