Paragliders on the mark in Queenstown Bay

After competitors had waited a month for the right weather conditions, Queenstown man Dan Stephens won the top prize in the annual Acrofest last weekend.

Stephens won the overall excellence award and the New Zealand national title for acroparagliding at the 2010 NZone Acrofest final at Queenstown Bay on Sunday.

Organiser Craig Taylor said eight paragliders had qualified for the finals during rounds in Kingston a month ago.

Weather conditions prevented the finals from taking place in Queenstown until Sunday, he said.

Second place went to Todd Weigand, of Queenstown, who also won the accuracy award, for landing on a raft in Lake Wakatipu.

Steve Branfitt, of Queenstown, won the freestyle freak award.

The paragliders were also joined by two hang-gliders and four skydiving swoopers, to entertain the large crowd watching the action from the beach.
