Wakatipu Playcentre will become a community hub for parents and children of all ages, president Rebecca Tanner says.

Formerly called the Frankton Playcentre, the parent-led preschool education facility has moved from a site next to Remarkables Primary School, which it occupied for seven years, into the former home of Remarkables Park developer Alastair Porter.

Located beside the new Wakatipu High School, the house has been remodelled into a modern, 170sq m facility.

Speaking at the playcentre's official opening by Queenstown Lakes Mayor Jim Boult yesterday, Mrs Tanner said children and their parents would be ''inspired'' by the facility's excellent design, large outdoor area and superb views.

''It's very sunny, light and airy.''

It was closer to the suburbs of Shotover Country and Lake Hayes Estate, where many of the centre's families lived, she said.

''The Ministry of Education have done us proud.

''We're looking forward to being a community hub for parents and children of all ages,'' Mrs Tanner said.

The playcentre has a 20-year lease on the 1280sq m site.

The ministry asked the playcentre to break its lease early at its former site so the primary school could take over the building to help accommodate its increasing roll.

Although the playcentre was no longer next door to the primary school, their ''close relationship'' would continue, Mrs Tanner said.

The Otago Daily Times reported in February the move has cost the ministry about $1.5 million.
