New child-care centre soon

Remarkable Start Early Learning is planning to open a second centre, in Jacks Point, next August.

Directors Debs McKerchar and Candice Stewart said they were finalising the centre's design, and expected to apply for a resource consent in a matter of weeks.

Building work was hoped to start early in the new year on a "fantastic" site on Maori Jack Rd, near the settlement's new village hub development.

Ms McKerchar said their existing early learning centre, next to Wakatipu High School, had more than 100 children on its roll and about 50 on a waiting list.

"We've got such an extensive waiting list here that when the opportunity became available, it just made sense to help out the families who want to be here but can't.

"We're excited about it because we love what we do here - it's such a fabulous school and we've got the opportunity to repeat it."

The new location was ideal as more families lived nearby.

It would open about six months before a new primary school opened in nearby Hanleys Farm.

The new centre would be licensed for 100 children, and bigger than their existing one, which was licensed for 76.

Like its sister centre, its programme would be based on the national curriculum and Montessori principles.

The announcement is the latest example of the Wakatipu's early learning sector adapting to cope with population growth and greenfields residential development.

Last month, the families of 49 children attending Little Earth Montessori were shocked when owner Evolve Education Group announced the Robins Rd facility would close today.

Meanwhile, a third Gems child-care centre will open on January 6 in a new building at Queenstown Country Club. Co-owner Gemma Smith said a public open day would be held on December 6.
