The biker was comforted by members of the public as he lay on the road until St John paramedics and police arrived about 6.30pm.
A woman at the scene, who did not want to be named, said the man appeared to have a broken leg.
St John South Island region press officer Gerard Campbell said ''a patient with serious injuries [was] initially transported by road to Lakes Hospital''.
He was then flown to Dunedin Hospital by helicopter.
No further details were available last night.
