Motatapu entrants this year collectively raised more than $15,000 for three Queenstown charities.

Race director Gemma Peskett says following the March 1 event, $13,396 has been given to the Queenstown Trails Trust.

The trust has been the official charity partner for the Motatapu event for over a decade — every year, a portion of competitors’ entry fees goes towards supporting its work.

Trails trust boss Mark ‘Willy’ Williams says the donation this year is "very much appreciated".

Responsible for planning and developing more than 200km of trails in the Whakatipu, including some in Mahu Whenua, accessed as part of the Motatapu event, the trust also focuses on having a positive environmental impact, working closely with Southern Lakes Sanctuary, which uses the trails for predator control work.

Peskett says a $1000 donation has been made to SLS on behalf of the age group place-getters across Motatapu’s five events.

Another $1000 has been given to the Lakes District Air Rescue Trust which provides financial support to the Otago Rescue Helicopter.

Next year’s Motatapu’s being held on March 7.
