More private carpark plans unveiled

Another application has been received by Queenstown’s council for a private carpark.

Peebles Group Ltd wants to build an at-grade asphalt carpark, with 53 parking bays, across three adjoining sections — 50, 52, and 54 Camp St — to operate for up to 15 years.

Existing buildings, with the exception of the Queenstown council category 2-listed heritage feature, Glenarm Cottage, which dates back to 1879, are to be removed.

The plan is to operate the carpark seven days a week, 24 hours a day, with short- and long-term parking available — a volunteered condition of consent is a ban on campervans and motorhomes, while signs will remind users to be "mindful and respectful" during night-time hours.

Peebles Group is asking for the application to be processed non-notified.

Meanwhile, a scheduled resource-consent hearing to determine whether Wilson Parking’s plans for an 85-space carpark on the corner of Frankton Rd and Brisbane St should be allowed — despite a planner’s recommendation that it shouldn’t — has now been postponed.

The hearing was set down in Queenstown this week, but an email said it was put on hold by the applicant late last week because "the applicant and landowner cannot come to an agreement on the payment of the hearing fee".
