Queenstown Lakes District Council contractors have been preparing new ground for burials at the Wanaka cemetery.

Communications manager Michele Poole said  trees were removed  but would be replanted in their original position as soon as the work was completed.

Only a "very small percentage" of the available land at the cemetery has been used or even prepared for use, so there was capacity to meet the needs of the community for many years, Ms Poole said.
