Man charged after crash

An 81-year-old man has been charged with careless driving after a crash at a hazardous intersection in Queenstown on Monday evening.

Senior Sergeant Paula Enoka, of Queenstown, said the man's vehicle was towing a trailer that was struck by a car at the intersection of Tucker Beach Rd and State Highway 6 about 5.30pm.

The man was turning right on to the highway from Tucker Beach Rd and the eastbound car was unable to avoid the trailer.

Snr Sgt Enoka said the vehicle and trailer were shunted to the edge of a steep bank, coming to a rest on a 45-degree angle.

Neither driver was injured in the crash, which caused minor damage to the trailer and second vehicle.

The NZ Transport Agency announced last week it was looking at upgrading the intersection.

NZTA southern business unit manager Ian Duncan said the proposal involved using a road beneath the Shotover River Bridge and adding a slip road that would merge on the other side of the highway.

The change would make it safer for drivers turning right from Tucker Beach Rd towards Frankton, Mr Duncan said.

Nearby residents have been expressing concern about the intersection's safety since 2012.
