Man to appear over two alleged stabbings

An Otago man will appear in the Queenstown District Court on Monday in relation to the alleged stabbing of two men in central Queenstown on Sunday.

The 20-year-old, who was remanded on bail in Wellington on Thursday, faces two charges of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

A warrant for his arrest was issued while he was on a flight to Australia on Monday, and he was stopped from entering the country with assistance from the Australian Federal Police.

Senior Sergeant Steve Watt, of Queenstown, said the man was returned to New Zealand on Wednesday night.

The charges stem from a confrontation on the Village Green, in Camp St, about 2.20am on Sunday, which police say involved up to 15 people.

Two men were flown separately to Dunedin Hospital suffering from stab wounds, one in a critical condition.

Both men remain in hospital in a stable condition.
