Juniors learning from the legends

Twenty-five of New Zealand’s top junior skiers have been learning from the best in Queenstown this week.

Ski racer Alice Robinson, earlier this year named Central Otago senior sportswoman of the year, and her coaching team, Tim Cafe and Nils Coberger, started a three-day training camp at Coronet Peak on Wednesday for under-14 and U16 ski racers, including seven members of the Queenstown Alpine Ski Team, selected based on their performances and points earned last season.

Over the course of the Snow Sports NZ Alpine Youth Camp, the athletes will focus on developing their giant slalom racing skills, learn from ‘Team Alice’ about life as an elite ski racer on the world cup circuit, and get some advice around wellness, mental skills and nutrition.

Fresh from a successful European season, Robinson, 22, says it’s great to spend time with the next generation of ski racers, and pass some of her knowledge on.

"I got to do a similar camp at a similar age, and it taught me a lot."

She’s particularly looking forward to getting the youngsters thinking about their skiing in a philosophical way and nailing the basics.

Robinson will start on-snow training at Coronet next week — major upcoming events include next month’s Winter Games NZ, running from August 27 to September 2.
