It is a case of better late than never for Lake Hawea boaties, who can begin using a new jetty that was supposed to be installed before Christmas.

Queenstown Lakes harbour master Marty Black said yesterday the Auckland suppliers and manufacturers had come in quite a lot of criticism for faults in the manufacturing process.

Delays were caused when they had to start again from scratch. However, no extra cost had been imposed on the ratepayers, he said.

Mr Black was pleased with the jetty and boaties could start using it.

The jetty was ‘‘virtually finished'' and just a few more tasks needed to be completed, including putting on some boat buffers, installing lights on the piles and trimming one pile to size.

Some of those jobs should be completed by the end of this week and any remaining tasks should be completed within a couple of weeks, Mr Black said.

The council's budget for the project was $205,000.
