Inquiry progressing

An investigation into an alleged unwanted advance towards a female hitchhiker between Queenstown and Cromwell should be resolved within a week, police say.

The 22-year-old hitchhiker was picked up near the Frankton cemetery on September 5 by a man driving a fawn 4WD. She was later dropped off in Cromwell.

Police spoke to the man the day after the incident. The woman claimed he had touched her inappropriately.

Detective Sergeant Derek Shaw, of Alexandra, told the Otago Daily Times police had yet to decide whether to charge the man.

``We're working through the statements we've obtained and making assessments.

``We hope to have a resolution within seven days.''

Police were quickly able to identify the driver, who is a Queenstown area resident, as a result of a ``very good response'' from members of the public in the resort, Frankton and Cromwell, Det Sgt Shaw said.
