The annual Wanaka Arts Society exhibition drew more than 600 people through the Lake Wanaka Centre doors at the weekend, with organisers delighted with the strong attendances.

Society president Pauline Parker said yesterday the Friday opening crowd was was smaller than previous years but Saturday and Sunday proved popular days for art viewing.

The exhibition was judged by Wanaka art gallery manager Melissa Reimer, Queenstown artist Rachael Errington, and interior design business owners Sue James-Moore and Mel Mueller.

The exhibition featured 153 works by about 60 artists and offered a prize pool of more than $3000.

The winner was Jennifer Majeske, who shares her time between Wellington and Queenstown, for her oil painting Farewell to the Farm.

The judges said the painting was a "stand-out work that spoke to all of us for different reasons".

"We admire the way the artist has captured the absolute vulnerability of the young person, whose gender is difficult to ascertain."

Second was Eion Shanks Dragon Taking Tea with the Taniwha and third was Andi Regan Milk Round.

The viewers' choice was Ann Schneeberger, for her photo Lake Wanaka.

Additional merit awards were given this year to two artists.

Mrs Parker won one for her installation Sylvia, depicting a domestic scene of a housewife chained to a table and leaving the story up to the viewer's imagination.

The judges described it as "really fun".

Dirk Van Watt won the second merit prize for his wood work Lady Pembroke, which the judges said was "beautiful".

Other winners: Pauline Hyndman (embroidery); Heather Kerr (creative fibre); Jeanette Gillies (patchwork); Bernie Kiyabu (woodwork); Patti Ellis (ceramics); Murray Shepherd (sculpture); Olwyn Pezaro (printmaking); Jacquie Scott (photography); Eion Shanks and Glenys Forbes (painting).

Eion Shanks (sponsor's choice).
