The smell of smoke was still lingering on Friday following a blaze which destroyed a caravan at a holiday park in Frankton on Thursday night last week.

Two people from Fire and Emergency New Zealand (Fenz) were seen inspecting the scene and what was left of the vehicle at Driftaway Queenstown on Friday afternoon.

A single pump truck and crew from Frankton Fire Brigade arrived at the scene in Lake Ave around 8.50pm on Thursday and had the blaze extinguished in about 20 minutes, a Fenz spokesman said.

The occupants escaped unharmed.

The spokesman said an investigation had been completed but could not confirm its result.

Only part of the lower half of the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter’s body remained. The caravan, which is believed to be hired, was several metres away from all neighbouring campers.

A spokesman for Driftaway Queenstown confirmed the occupants of the rental caravan were safe and staying at a villa at the holiday park in the meantime.
