Queenstown's tourism body has described Skyline’s $60 million gondola redevelopment as a "real commitment and demonstration of confidence".

Destination Queenstown chief executive Graham Budd congratulated the tourism company on its proposed investment, for which a resource consent application was lodged this week.

Skyline Queenstown general manager Lyndon Thomas said public support for the development, announced in June, had been "overwhelming".

Yesterday, the company unveiled artist’s impressions of what the new Michael Wyatt-designed complex would look like.

Provided consent was granted, one of the most significant investments the company has made in almost 30 years will be complete by July 2018.

Mr Thomas said the company had taken an "open consultative approach" to the project and was in regular contact with affected parties and stakeholders.

"We are very happy with the progress and positivity within the community.

"Our team is working very hard to ensure that we stay on track for a July 2018 completion of the gondola."

The proposed development includes the replacement of the existing gondola, a major expansion of the upper complex, including the viewing deck, and a redeveloped lower terminal building.

Mr Budd said Skyline was already one of the resort’s most popular and patronised tourism attractions and the planned investment showed a belief in the future of its business and Queenstown’s "enduring appeal as New Zealand’s most popular holiday destination".

"We are very fortunate that Queenstown is the home to numerous New Zealand tourism pioneers who continue to invest and improve their products and experiences to maintain our world-class destination status," he said.
