The Lake Hawea Holiday Park is to offer more upmarket choices for campers as part of a redevelopment plan.

Lessees Sarah and Richard Burdon have proposed a redevelopment of the park which includes alterations  to buildings and adding more buildings  and sites for accommodation. In their submission to the Wanaka Community Board, the Burdons said there was a growing demand for glamping and "unique" accommodation options, for which the proposed development would cater.  Seven glamping platforms would be added to the holiday park, to be available from Labour Weekend until Easter.

Eight new accommodation domes, each with a gas fire, en suite, sink and fridge, would also be built.

Each dome and glamping tent would hold up to four visitors.

One large 140sqm dome would also be built as a communal indoor area.

Alterations would be made to the holiday park’s ablution block and Top House Lodge which is one of the site’s original buildings. The lodge would be extended and remodelled into a communal area for the proposed dome accommodation units.

As the holiday park is  on a Queenstown Lakes District Council reserve, affected party approval was needed from the Wanaka Community Board. The community board approved the plans at a meeting in Wanaka yesterday  and chairwoman Rachel Brown wished the Burdons the best with their plans. A resource consent application will now be submitted to the council.
