A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokeswoman said crews from Frankton and Queenstown, along with tankers from Arrowtown and Kingston Stations, responded to reports of a car fire on the access road to the skifield about 1.25pm yesterday.

When crews arrived they discovered the fire had spread to vegetation and two helicopters were requested due to the rough terrain.

By about 3pm the fire had been contained and the helicopters had been stood down, the spokeswoman said.

An NZSki spokeswoman said a vehicle travelling down the access road had experienced mechanical issues and caught fire.

The occupants pulled off the road and got out of the vehicle shortly before it ignited.

No-one was injured and the road was closed while the incident was dealt with, the spokeswoman said.

The vegetation fire is understood to have been about 100m by 50m.
