The Remarkables ski area was the venue for some unconventional sporting events on Saturday.

A large lunchtime crowd enjoyed what Queenstown Winter Festival director Lisa Buckingham called"quirky yet competitive'' events.

That included a record 20 entrants in the Dash for Cash, in which they had to ski, board and run up and down the mountain to earn the $250 cash prize.

Alexandra's Nick Pascoe won the men's event, the women's title went to Queenstown's Hazel Wills, and multisport legend Steve Gurney, of Queenstown, won the veterans' prize.

Twenty-two people competed in the Suitcase Race, in which contestants slid down a course in or on a piece of baggage. Gurney was the fastest man to the bottom, while Michelle Watt, of Queenstown, won the women's race.

A new event, the Bobsled Race, was won by Owen John, of Tauranga.

Children also had an opportunity to shine in the Treasure Traverse, searching in the snow for clues that led to a cache of children's gear.

Ice hockey fans were treated to a thriller at the Queenstown Ice Arena on Saturday night.

Local team Stampede won the first game of a weekend double-header against the Canterbury Red Devils 6-0 on Friday.

But the Red Devils turned the tables 24 hours later, winning the second match 3-2 after it went into overtime and then a shootout.
