Fatal crash at Jacks Pt

One person has died and another was critically injured in a crash near Queenstown last night.

The death brings the Easter weekend road toll to two.

Initial reports from the crash in Kingston Rd at Jacks Point shortly after 6pm yesterday were that two people were critically injured in the crash, involving two vehicles.

However, about 8pm, a police spokeswoman confirmed one of the injured had died at the scene.

The other critically injured person was taken to Dunedin Hospital by helicopter, the spokeswoman said.

The crash appeared to be between a car and a utility vehicle, she said.

The spokeswoman said fire crews had responded, but were cleared from the scene shortly after 8pm.

It was the second death in New Zealand roads over the Easter period, she said.

It was also the second serious incident in the Queenstown-Lakes district yesterday.

About 4.40pm, a person was seriously injured after being crushed by a truck into a shed in Kinloch Rd, near Glenorchy, she said.

It was not immediately clear if anyone was driving the truck in that incident.

Meanwhile, one person died in the Auckland suburb of Takanini after a fleeing driver incident on Thursday night.

The Easter holiday period began at 4pm on Thursday and runs until 6am on Tuesday.
