Fair ‘so much more’ than just books

An icy morning did not stop hundreds of Queenstown locals attending the annual St Joseph’s Primary School book fair yesterday morning.

Thousands of second-hand books had been donated by the community which were on sale for $1 each.

School principal Alan Grant said the fair was "so much more" than just a book sale.

Other attractions included a book reading by Nadia Lim, food stalls, and performances by pupils, such as kapa haka and the school choir.

Year 7 and 8 pupils all got the chance to run their own stalls at the fair, ranging from second-hand clothing stalls to shooting basketball and kicking football goals.

Mr Grant said it was a great opportunity for the pupils to learn business skills, such as making budgets.

The annual book fair is run by St Joseph’s Primary School PTA, and is the biggest yearly fundraiser for the school.

The fundraising target from this year’s fair was $25,000, but Mr Grant said it would take time to count up the earnings.

Mr Grant said in previous years, money raised from the book fair had gone towards school repairs, new playground equipment and funding extra support staff for pupils.
