'Extremely high' breath-alcohol level

An alleged drink-driver caught near Arrowtown on Monday night was more than six times the legal limit, police say.

Senior Sergeant Paula Enoka, of Queenstown, said a passing motorist called police after seeing the 37-year-old sitting behind the wheel of her car, with its engine running, on McDonnell Rd about 9.30pm.

The car was touching the rear of a parked vehicle, possibly after a ''slow collision''.

When police arrived, the woman was out of her vehicle but nearby. Her breath-alcohol level was 1521mg.

Snr Sgt Enoka said the ''extremely high'' reading was the highest she had seen in her career.

Despite widespread publicity about drink-driving, some people were not heeding the message, she said.

''Some people will drink and drive, and our hope is that we can be there to catch them.''

The woman is expected to appear in court on October 10.
