A man has died after falling at a cliff just outside Queenstown earlier today.

The Lakes Weekly Bulletin this afternoon reported that a man had died following a 50m fall just off Gorge Rd, and that the death had been referred to the Coroner.

The man was believed to have been with a female companion.

In a separate statement to the Otago Daily Times this evening, police confirmed the death, and said they were providing support to his next of kin.

In an earlier statement police said they were alerted about 11.55am to the incident, "where a person has reportedly fallen while climbing".

Police, ambulance and fire crews were at the scene and people could be seen on a steep track just off the road.
