Wakatipu High School year 12 pupils took part in a "Drive to Survive'' initiative at Queenstown Events Centre this week.
One aspect of the one-day course was to set up a two-vehicle mock collision, showing students what can happen in a real-life crash situation.
Local police, fire crew and St John staff all took part in the display.
Senior Constable Phil Vink, of Wanaka, said it was an opportunity to highlight what could happen in an accident.
Other areas of discussion included alcohol consumption, road rules, the use of modified vehicles and police booze buses.
"It is a chance for them to understand the hazards they can find on the road and the responsibilities they have as young drivers.''
