A Queenstown DJ who seriously injured a man by pushing him off a stage has been sentenced to community work and ordered to pay reparation.

Stuart Edwin Raeburn (39) was sentenced in the Queenstown District Court yesterday on a charge arising from an incident at The World Bar, in Queenstown’s central business area, on June 12.

The police summary of facts said Raeburn was performing at the Church St bar about 12.50am when the victim got on the stage and touched his equipment, turning off the music momentarily.

An annoyed Raeburn pushed him against the wall, telling him to get off the stage.

He then pushed the victim away from the DJ booth, causing him to fall off the 33cm-high stage on to the floor, hitting his head on a stone hearth.

The victim was unconscious when police and paramedics arrived, and was flown to Christchurch Hospital in a critical condition.

He suffered a fractured skull and brain bleeding, and remained in Christchurch Hospital for several days. Raeburn was convicted on August 15 after admitting a charge of injuring by unlawful act in circumstances where, if the victim had died, he would be guilty of manslaughter.

Judge Bernadette Farnan yesterday sentenced Raeburn to 200 hours’ community work and ordered him to pay the victim $5111.39 reparation.

It was the first conviction for Raeburn, a British national who has lived in New Zealand since 2006.

He is well-known in Queenstown by his stage name, DJ Stubacca, and has been a regular performer at The World Bar.
