Disposal system's problems put to rest

Contractors have just 1km of pipe left to install for Wanaka's $19.5 million Project Pure waste water disposal system at Wanaka Airport.

Queenstown Lakes District Council engineering manager Mark Kunath told the Wanaka Community Board this week any concerns about the standard of pipe welding had been laid to rest.

Earlier this year, it was discovered the German welding standard had been accidentally applied to some of the polyethylene pipe joins instead of the preferred English standard.

Tests had been conducted and no concerns had been recorded.

The standards relating to both types of joins were acceptable, but the English standard had a slightly higher jointing pressure than the German standard, which was considered to be advantageous, Mr Kunath said.

There had been no further delays to the project and the system should be ready for use by the end of September.

The project was meeting its budget, Mr Kunath said.

Meanwhile, the council had applied to the Otago Regional Council for an extension of the oxidation pond discharge permits as a contingency measure.
