Queenstown resident Thomas van den Berg was relaxing at his Arthur's Point home yesterday when he heard a big bang.
Seconds later his wife, Christina, came running up their Redfern Tce driveway.
Mr van den Berg initially thought something had happened to the couple's 18-month-old daughter and rushed outside to find a Nissan Sunny upside down just centimetres from the couple's home.
Mrs van den Berg was arriving home about noon when she saw the car plunge into the couple's driveway.
Police, fire and ambulance were called to the incident after the vehicle left Redfern Tce, went over a footpath, through a fence and dropped nearly 7m, landing on its roof.
Mr van den Berg said the car appeared to have hit the roof of a climbing wall he had built in the driveway, before coming to rest on two beanbags and an umbrella, which were destined for the tip.
The van den Bergs helped pull the female driver and sole occupant from the vehicle and tried to calm her down.
''She was just in a lot of shock, hyperventilating a little bit.''
The woman, in her 20s, was taken to Lakes District Hospital with moderate injuries.

Mr van den Berg said he had no idea what caused the crash, but ''you would have to be doing something pretty interesting to crash there [in summer]''.
''It's quite a feat, really. You probably couldn't do it if you tried it.''
Miraculously, the car missed the property Mr van den Berg has owned for about eight years, but did wreck part of a fence.
However, it missed a new beanbag and the climbing wall appeared unscathed.
''I must have built it [the wall] quite solidly.''
A Police media spokeswoman said the vehicle was removed from the driveway by a towing company about 1pm and Queenstown Lakes District Council contractors were advised of the insecure barrier on Redfern Tce.
Constable Simon Matheson, of Queenstown, said inquiries were continuing.
