The Gorge Rd gardens sources water from the nearby creek using water tanks — but it often dries out.
Committee member Paula Squire-Thomas says they run out of water "fairly regularly" during the summer months — it’s already happened once this year.
To ensure a more sustainable supply, the gardens committee’s fundraised enough to get a water bore drilled and capped off, however, they still need more to get it up and running.
Squire-Thomas says they need another $4000 for a generator and water pump, to get the bore hooked up and working.
The reliable water source will keep plants alive, and help the gardens continue to support the community — for example, two plots are dedicated to growing produce for Baskets of Blessing, while they also regularly provide produce to Abbeyfield Whakatipu.
"You would be surprised with how much food we actually grow," Squire-Thomas says.
