CAA quiet over skydive crash

The Civil Aviation Authority is saying little about its investigation into a skydiving accident near Queenstown at the weekend that left two men seriously injured.

CAA communications and safety promotion manager Mike Richards did not respond to questions from the Otago Daily Times about the investigation.

In an emailed statement, he would only say the CAA was working with police, WorkSafe and the skydiving company to "establish the circumstances around this accident which will help shape the direction of a safety investigation''.

There was "no obvious indication as to the cause''.

He would not say whether the authority had sent investigators to the resort, whether skydiving experts would assist with the investigation, or when he expected the injured men to be interviewed.

NZONE Skydive staff Sasa Jojic and Sasa Ljaskevic were injured in a tandem training jump on Saturday morning.

Police say the men hit the ground at "a high speed''.

Mr Richards said the CAA would have little more to say until its investigators released their findings, which could take up to a year.

"If in the course of the investigation any safety critical factor is identified, the CAA will alert the aviation industry immediately to prevent a repeat of the accident.''

A request to the Southern District Health Board for an update on the conditions of the men was declined.
